James Schofield, husband of PPCC professor Robin Schofield, is rallying PPCC students to assist with aid, relief, and reconstruction efforts in Puerto Rico after the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria.
Schofield and his team from Impact Adventures, a Christian outreach organization based in Colorado Springs, have been working closely with the mayor and Servicio al Ciudadano (Citizens Service Office) of Caille, Puerto Rico, to bring aid to the city and surrounding areas.
PPCC students who volunteer will assist with distributing food, water and medicine as well as surveying the needs of individuals and households in the communities around Caille. More able-bodied volunteers are also needed to help clear roadways to isolated communities and help reconstruct homes and buildings.
Students looking to volunteer will have to pay for their own airfare, estimated at $350-500. Schofield said students should also expect to spend roughly $200 per week for housing, food and transportation, but those details are still being worked out with the mayor and Servicio al Ciudadano.
No federal passport is required for U.S. citizens to travel to Puerto Rico – only a driver’s license or other form of federal ID. Students in the U.S. on a temporary work visa should bring their full visa documentation.
