The Mathematics Department invites the PPSC community to an afternoon of mathematical exploration and discovery at its bi-annual Mathematics Colloquium on Friday, November 12, from 11:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Centennial Campus Atrium.
The Mathematics Colloquium is an event that showcases student presentations on a wide range of mathematical topics, and celebrates students’ curiosity, creativity, and passion for math. This semester’s event also includes a keynote presentation from Dr. Lauren “Jeneva” Clark, a distinguished Teaching Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK).
Dr. Clark is an internationally recognized educator, researcher, and curriculum leader, she holds an M.S. in Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Teacher Education with a specialized concentration in Mathematics Education from UTK. Her active research portfolio explores cutting-edge instructional design, generative AI integrations in algebraic proofs, and how students constructively learn from errors. Notably, her peer-reviewed practitioner research includes a flagship collaborative paper co-authored with PPSC’s own Dr. Alan Von Hermann in the Journal of Humanistic Mathematics, tracking the positive impacts of peer instruction models in Calculus III.
Her keynote presentation, Math in Real Time: Geometric Dissections and Live Artistic Discovery, will explore the irrationality of √2 through accessible, hands-on activities involving geometric constructions, proportional reasoning, tiling, and dissection. And while Dr. Clark is presenting, co-presenting student Sarah Hart will simultaneously create an original artwork live; so the audience can watch her capture the mathematics and discoveries as they transpire.
The Colloquium presents a great opportunity for students to network, get inspired, and share their passion; so come out to the Centennial Campus Atrium on Friday, November 20th to discover the beauty of mathematics and connect with like-minded people!
