Did you know that there’s a student operated radio station at Centennial Campus called eXtra Music that plays a variety of alternative hits?
The programming on eXtra Music plays a mix of the best alternative hits of today and 2000s throwbacks, 90s retro rewinds, and 80s flashbacks. Broadcasting and Electronic Media instructor and station operations manager AJ Matthews says that “in addition to that awesome and eclectic mix, we feature some very cool specialty shows.”

eXtra Music is “a station for the Gen X kid who may have grown older but never grew up,” said Matthews. “We play maximum variety (with no commercials) and feature a huge library of incredible music.” The station’s programming has no commercials but instead the occasional student-made spot, where students write, record and edit a quick 30-second or less spot for whatever band plays next or just for the station as a whole.
All of the student made and operated content is rewarding in some way: “It is such a joy for me work with the students as they grow and truly find their ‘voice’,” said Matthews. “Whether a student is interested in pursuing a career in radio broadcasting, podcasting, or any other form of audio content creation or not, the skills developed interning on eXtra Music are skills that transcend important life skills regarding how to effectively communicate an idea or ideas in a compelling and succinct manner.”
Students can access the station through the eXtra Music app available on Apple or Android, at 102.1 or 89.1 FM, and at AM 1490. Additionally, any student with the app may go down to the radio station at the Centennial Campus in room A-153 on a weekday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a free eXtra Music T-shirt.

- Music from the Underground: two hours of Goth, Industrial and more—Monday nights from 10 p.m. to midnight
