Students looking to be published for the first time have the opportunity through the student literary journals published by the English department, Parley and SITREP. Now is the time to submit as both publications are looking for student submissions.

These journals are focused on broadcasting student voices through print and online editions providing a space for students to submit their creations for a chance to be published.

Both publications look for new submissions for each new issue, giving all students a place to publish their art. Editor of Parley, Mandy Solomon says the book is published twice a year online and once a year in print.  “[Parley] is a collection of student voices and their creative visions,” Solomon says.

The 2024 print edition of Parley has already been released, featuring “poetry, fiction, nonfiction, photography, and visual art,” which can be picked up now in the Centennial and Rampart Learning Commons or the Downtown Publications Office in room S234. If you’re interested in getting published, Parley “look(s) for work that has been carefully crafted and revised. We also look for pieces that are timely and original,” says Solomon.

SITREP, the military arts journal, generates a space for veteran and military-affiliated students to create. Editor Dana Zimbleman says SITREP’s content is “material that examines military life and service, but submissions need not be limited to this topic.”

The journal began on November 11, 2020, Veterans’ Day, and has continued for the last four years with suupport from the Division of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences as well as the English Department and Military and Veterans Programs. The journal publishes online every fall for Veteran’s Week and in print coming out in late May or early June. SITREP’s contents include “essays, poetry, plays, interviews, photography, and other works.” The creative content SITREP puts out is not just military focused.

Military-affiliated students can submit their work no matter what it is related to, as “We know that members of our military community possess a wide range of talents beyond their service affiliation,” Zimbleman says.

Parley and SITREP are both looking for new submissions from creative students to add to their upcoming editions. Submit any time by emailing parley@pikespeak.edu. Students should designate in their email which journal they are submitting work for.

  • Submit to SITREP by Nov. 1 for consideration for Veteran’s Week
  • Print-edition Parley and SITREP submissions are currently rolling
